About Birmingham

With a population of over one million, Birmingham is widely considered to be the United Kingdom’s second city. The people of Birmingham are known as “Brummies”, which comes from the city’s early name of Bromwicham.
The city’s reputation was forged as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. It is now a major international commercial centre, attracting significant foreign investment. Recent regeneration in the city centre has seen the introduction of canal side restaurants, bars and shops. The size of 26 football pitches, Birmingham’s Bullring Centre is one of the UK’s most visited shopping destinations. It includes the iconic Selfridges store.
It’s a city combining the old and new – the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery houses the greatest Pre-Raphaelite art collection in the world. The new Library of Birmingham is the largest public cultural space in Europe.
Popular areas outside the city centre include the well regarded suburbs of Edgbaston and Harborne and the neighbouring prosperous commuter towns of Solihull and Sutton Coldfield.

Education

There are excellent state and independent schools in the area, including Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls, King Edward’s School, Birmingham and Solihull School.

Transport

Birmingham is a major transport hub with excellent access to the road (M6, M42 and M5) and rail networks – the newly re-developed New Street Station (under 1 hour 30 minutes to London) is the main of the three stations in the city. Birmingham International Airport, situated to the east of the city near Solihull, is being expanded and has the second largest proportion of business traffic after London Heathrow.
